Glazing & Firing

About this service

  • Glazing and firing are critical steps in the pottery making process that ensure your creations are waterproof and food safe. Glazing and firing involve coating your creations with a protective glass layer, and slowly heating them to a hot 1280°C to melt the glaze and seal the clay. Firing takes place in a special, insulated oven called a kiln and all pottery requires two firings.

  • Publicly accessible kiln services manage thousands of ceramics at a time, which often leads to mishandling, breakages and things going missing. That’s why, in addition to your DIY Clay Kit or Top Up Kit (glazing and firing packages only), we include a complimentary glazing and firing service to take the stress of finding a kiln off your shoulders.

Our expert kiln technician will personally handle and glaze your creations at our studio, and ensure they are safely and securely fired in our private kiln. As part of this service, we will also sand and polish your ceramics free of charge prior to delivery.

Please note that firing can sometimes reveal hidden faults, flaws and damages in the clay resulting from the making process. Everyday Clay is not responsible for a piece cracking, breaking or any other type of unsatisfactory result after firing. Although unlikely, charges may apply under conditions of kiln damage caused by poorly constructed pottery. To avoid breakages and damages to our kiln, please carefully and thoroughly read the instructions in your clay kit, and contact us at hello@everydayclay.com.au if you have any concerns about firing your pieces.

More information about our clay kits can also be found on our FAQs page.
